Safe Sleep
Alone, Back, Crib

To make sure that your baby is sleeping safely, follow the ABC’s of safe sleep for every sleep and nap:
- Alone (not with any blankets, pillows, toys or another person)
- On their Back
- In a safe Crib or bassinet
If you do not have a crib or bassinet, Columbus Public Health can help. Families may qualify to get a Pack ‘n Play portable crib at no cost in order to provide a safe sleep space for their new baby. Call Columbus Public Health at (614) 645-3111 to see if you qualify.
Offering some additional insights of the ABCs of Safe Sleep, we remind you that babies should never sleep:
- On a couch, chair or other soft surface. They can roll into corners or off the surface and hurt or trap themselves.
- In a car seat when outside of the car. When the car seat isn’t at the proper angle for use in a car, a baby’s head can tilt into a poor position, causing their airway to fold and prevent them from breathing. Babies need to be laid flat on their backs for sleep.
- In an adult bed. They can get stuck between the mattress and the wall or headboard, or become trapped in bedding. Tired caregivers can also risk rolling over on their babies.
- On your chest. If you are tired, you could roll over on your baby or trap them in the sleep surface, such as between your body and a couch cushion.
- On fleece blankets, pillows (including boppy loungers), or memory foam. Only a tightly fitted sheet should be under the baby. The mattress is to be firm. Babies should not be covered with blankets.
- With hats or mittens. Mittens can come off and get over the nose and hats can slide down and get over the nose.
- Swaddled in a receiving blanket or muslin swaddle blanket. These can come loose when the baby wiggles and get over the face.
